How to Unlock Your Electronic Car Door After a Crash

Most of us trust our cars because they’re packed with airbags, sensors, and five-star crash ratings, but almost none of us have actually practiced getting out when the electronics go dark. That sleek little button on your door only works as long as the system does. After a collision, a dead battery, or a shorted circuit, you may be sitting in a sealed box, dazed, injured, and suddenly very aware that you don’t actually know how to open your own door without power.

The fix isn’t complicated—but it does require intention. Find your manual door release, trunk release, and any emergency overrides today, while everything is calm and working. Pull them. Feel the resistance. Show your kids, your partner, your aging parents. Stash a window breaker and seatbelt cutter where you can reach them with either hand. You may never need any of it. But if you do, knowing what to grab—and where—could be the thin line between a terrifying close call and a tragedy.
