This evening, I went into my girlfriend’s bathroom and found this on the floor.

Closer inspection made the object look less like discarded material and more like a living organism. Its flexible body and apparent movement prompted me to compare photographs online, where images of leeches offered a possible match. That resemblance gave me an explanation, but not a confirmed identification: I had neither consulted a specialist nor established its species. Inspecting the surrounding fixtures also revealed no obvious source. How it had reached the room remained unanswered.

The encounter left me watchful, though nothing suggested a bite, injury, or ongoing household danger. For a while, every unfamiliar shadow made me pause. What unsettled me most was how quickly uncertainty could disturb the comfort of home. Eventually, I understood that caution did not require assuming the worst. Looking carefully had helped me make sense of the discovery, even if the creature’s identity—and the mystery of its arrival—could not be settled with certainty.
