The mystery of Christ crucified is not a distant doctrine but a direct, personal address. In the Son who “was made to bear sin,” we see a love so radical that Pope Benedict XVI could call it a “turning of God against himself.” This is how seriously God takes both our sin and our worth: He carries our guilt to win our hearts. Such a love is not satisfied with shallow chatter or the restless consumption of novelty. When we place the paschal mystery at the center of life, the world’s wounds no longer remain abstractions. We recognize Christ in the unborn and the elderly, in victims of war, exploitation, trafficking, and ecological devastation. Almsgiving then becomes more than a seasonal gesture; it is a protest against idolatrous greed and a concrete step toward justice. Structural change, political engagement, and a more humane economy all flow from this same crucified love. Under Mary’s intercession, a Lenten conversion of heart can free us from hoarding, awaken us to reconciliation, and make us, once more, salt of the earth and light of the world.
