Raised wipers are usually a weather precaution, not a mysterious signal. During freezing conditions, lifting the blades can keep them from becoming stuck to the windshield, making snow and ice removal easier. Some drivers also raise them in extreme heat to reduce contact with sunbaked glass, although that does not shield the rubber from hot air, sunlight, or aging. The goal is straightforward: preserve the blades that help keep the road visible when conditions turn dangerous.
But leaving wipers upright is not right for every vehicle or every storm. An exposed arm can snap back against the windshield, potentially damaging the glass, and some vehicles require a special service position before lifting. Check the owner’s manual, clear ice before operating the wipers, and never force frozen blades loose. Regular inspection and replacement remain essential. This small habit may help in certain conditions, but dependable visibility ultimately requires more than raised arms.
