Jay Leno’s wife, Mavis, was diagnosed with advanced dementia in April 2024. Since then, the 76-year-old comedian has dedicated himself to her care—and opened up about how heartbreaking that reality can be.
Jay and Mavis met in the 1970s after he performed at the Comedy Store, and married in 1980. Before him, Mavis never expected to marry at all.
“I always had this idea that I would never get married,”
she told People Magazine back in 1987. “But with Jay, I began to realize that this was the first time I was ever with someone where I had a perfect, calm sense of having arrived at my destination.”
Decades later, that bond is being tested in ways neither of them could have imagined. In an interview with Today, Leno described one of the most painful parts of caring for Mavis, now 79.
“Probably the toughest part was every day she’d wake up and realize someone had called today to tell her her mother had passed away,”
he said. “Her mother died every day for, like, three years. And it was not just crying — you’re learning for the first time. Each time was really tricky.”
Despite the heartbreak, Leno says he wouldn’t trade his role for anything, telling People Magazine he genuinely enjoys caring for her.
“Now she really needs me, and I like that. And I can tell she appreciates it,”
he said. “The idea that you get married, you take these vows — nobody ever thinks they’ll be called upon to act on them. But even the ‘worse’ isn’t that bad.”
