A routine stop at a U.S. Border Patrol checkpoint on August 1, 2023, turned into a serious criminal case that has now concluded in federal court.
According to court records, the encounter occurred on U.S. Highway 57 when a Border Patrol canine alerted agents to a vehicle driven by 26-year-old Kevin Dominguez. During an inspection of the trunk, agents discovered an undocumented individual concealed inside the sedan.
Authorities said that at that moment, Dominguez attempted to flee the checkpoint. Investigators reported that he reversed the vehicle, striking a federal agent before driving away from the scene. He was apprehended shortly afterward.
Prosecutors charged Dominguez with assaulting a federal officer and transporting an individual unlawfully. In court, the government argued that the decision to flee placed both law enforcement personnel and the passenger at significant risk. The injured agent later recovered.
A federal judge sentenced Dominguez to 18 months in prison, followed by a term of supervised release. Officials stated that the sentence reflects the seriousness of assaulting a federal officer and the dangers associated with attempting to evade law enforcement at checkpoints.
The case underscores the legal consequences of actions taken in high-pressure situations and highlights ongoing enforcement efforts along border highways.
