Princess Diana was determined to give William and Harry as normal a childhood as possible, despite growing up inside the walls of royal tradition. One story, shared years later by her former personal chef, Darren McGrady, captured exactly how far she was willing to go for that.
“I remember the princess came into the kitchen one day and said, ‘Cancel lunch for the boys, I’m taking them out, we’re going to McDonald’s,'” McGrady told Marie Claire.
McGrady offered to simply recreate the meal himself, but Diana insisted the boys needed the real experience — not just the food.
“And I said, ‘Oh my God – your Royal Highness, I can do that, I can do burgers.’ And she said, ‘No, it’s the toy they want,'” he recalled.
It wasn’t an isolated moment. Diana regularly took her sons to theme parks, fast food restaurants, and even a homeless shelter — determined to show them a world beyond palace walls.
“My mother introduced me to the cause of homelessness from quite a young age, and I’m really glad she did,” William later explained in an interview with The Sunday Times.
She also made sure their childhood was filled with warmth and laughter at home. Harry has fondly remembered his mother sneaking treats into her socks during their walks home from football matches.
“She was one of the naughtiest parents, she’d come and watch us play football and smuggle sweets into her socks… the whole shirt was full with sweets,” Harry recalled.
Today, William is raising George, Charlotte, and Louis with those very same values — determined to give his own children the same sense of normalcy his mother once fought so hard to give him.
“As far as we are concerned within our family unit, we are a normal family,” William said. “I love my children in the same way any father does.”
Some of the most powerful lessons a parent can pass down aren’t about titles or privilege — they’re about a trip to McDonald’s, just to see the smile on your child’s face.
Her own chef offered to make them burgers himself. She said no — it wasn’t about the food. 🍔
