For some trans men, transmasculine, and non-binary people, “male lesbian” is the only phrase that captures the reality of living as male or masculine while feeling their lesbian identity carved into their bones. It isn’t just about who they love, but about community, history, and the way “lesbian” shaped them long before transition. To them, dropping the word feels like erasing a part of their soul.
Many lesbians, however, see the term as a line being crossed. They’ve spent decades defending “lesbian” as a word for women and non-men attracted to women, in a world that constantly tries to dilute or correct them. When anyone who identifies as a man claims that label, it can feel like a fresh intrusion into one of the few spaces built by and for them. Between these two truths lies a painful, unresolved question: can language stretch to hold everyone, without breaking what some fought to build?
