The family of Austin Metcalf faced the man convicted of killing the 17-year-old during an emotional court proceeding that underscored the lasting impact of the case. What began as a dispute at a high school track meet ultimately led to a fatal stabbing, a murder conviction, and a sentence that family members say cannot ease their loss.
Karmelo Anthony was found guilty of murder after prosecutors argued that an argument over seating beneath a team tent escalated into violence. According to evidence presented at trial, the confrontation ended when Metcalf suffered a single stab wound to the chest.
The jury rejected Anthony’s claim that he acted in self-defense and later sentenced him to 35 years in prison. The verdict brought a legal conclusion to the case, but family members said it could not restore the future they had envisioned for Austin.
Following the sentencing, Austin’s father, Jeff Metcalf, spoke about the toll the tragedy has taken on his family. He said they had been “robbed” not only of Austin’s life and future but also of the opportunity to remember him without what he described as public narratives that failed to reflect who his son truly was.
