Teen Gets Electrocuted Because of a Phone Charger in Bed

Posted on May 14, 2025 By admin No Comments on Teen Gets Electrocuted Because of a Phone Charger in Bed

In May 2025, a 16-year-old from Yukon, Oklahoma, experienced a life-threatening accident involving his phone charger. While adjusting his position in bed, Rayce Ogdahl’s crucifix necklace came into contact with exposed prongs of an extension cord plug.

This contact caused a severe electric shock, leading to burns on his neck and hands. His mother, Danielle Davis, was awakened by his screams and found him with visible injuries and the smell of burnt hair and skin in the air.

Medical Emergency and Aftermath

Rayce was rushed to Integris Health Baptist Medical Center’s burns unit in Oklahoma City, where he was admitted to the intensive care unit. Doctors reported that he had endured enough amperage to be fatal. He suffered second, third, and fourth-degree burns, resulting in significant scarring from his chin to his collarbone. Despite the severity, Rayce remained conscious throughout the ordeal and is now recovering, though he may require skin grafts.

A Mother’s Warning to Others

Following the incident, Rayce’s mother, Danielle, took to social media to share her son’s story in hopes of preventing similar accidents. She emphasized how common it is for teens to sleep with their phones nearby, often charging them in bed without a second thought. Her post quickly went viral, striking a chord with thousands of parents who admitted to never considering such a risk. Danielle’s message is clear: “Check the cords. Check the outlets. It takes just a second for everything to change.”

Broader Implications and Safety Concerns

This incident is not isolated. Similar accidents have occurred, such as a 16-year-old girl in Massachusetts who sustained burns when her portable phone charger exploded while she was watching movies with friends. The charger, purchased online, was magnetically attached to her iPhone when it exploded, causing her sweatshirt to catch fire and leaving burns on her arm.

These events underscore the hidden dangers associated with charging electronic devices, especially in bed or using extension cords. Experts advise against charging phones overnight, placing them under pillows, or using damaged or third-party chargers. Such practices can lead to overheating, fires, or electric shocks.

Preventative Measures

To minimize risks:

  • Use only manufacturer-approved chargers and cables.
  • Avoid charging devices on soft surfaces like beds or sofas.
  • Regularly inspect chargers and cords for damage.
  • Refrain from using extension cords for charging devices.
  • Never place charging devices under pillows or blankets.

Rayce’s experience serves as a stark reminder of the potential hazards lurking in everyday routines. By adopting safer charging habits and being vigilant about the condition and placement of our devices, we can prevent such near-tragic incidents and ensure the safety of ourselves and our loved ones.
