A major industrial fire at a biscuit manufacturing facility near Trikala, Greece, has killed four workers, according to Greek authorities. Emergency services responded in the early hours of the morning after flames broke out at the plant, prompting a large-scale firefighting operation and an ongoing investigation into the cause.
The fire occurred around 4:00 a.m. at the Violanta Biscuit Factory, located roughly 200 miles north of Athens. Authorities said 13 employees were inside the facility during the overnight shift. Eight managed to escape, while four women were later found dead after firefighters gained access to the damaged sections of the building.
The Hellenic Fire Service deployed about 40 firefighters and 15 vehicles to the scene. Crews battled heavy smoke and structural instability as flames spread through parts of the industrial complex. One additional worker was initially reported missing during rescue efforts, while several individuals, including a firefighter, were taken to hospital for treatment and observation.
Officials have not yet determined the cause of the fire. Early witness accounts referenced a possible loud sound before the blaze began, but investigators have not confirmed whether an explosion occurred. Authorities emphasized that all scenarios remain under review as forensic teams examine electrical systems, machinery, and safety conditions at the site.
Violanta, the company operating the factory, said it is cooperating fully with authorities and expressed condolences to the victims’ families, adding that its immediate priority is supporting employees and those affected.
The tragedy has drawn widespread attention in Greece, where industrial safety regulations require strict fire prevention and emergency preparedness measures. Investigators are expected to continue their work in the coming days, with officials urging the public to rely only on verified information as the inquiry progresses.
